The progression system hits the sweet spot, and the final puzzel was extremely good. The fragments of story scattered through are a nice touch in the puzzles. Altogether a top quality game, would recommend. Warning for achievement hunters: Only 15 out of 29 achievements for this game are working properly. The rest are un-achievable, and some that they have planned are outright ridiculous. The developers posted in December that they would be fixing this in "the coming weeks" on the discussion page, and have been radio-silent ever since.I will update and possibly change my recommendation when this update eventually rolls out.. I'm a sucker for this sort of games that combine interesting puzzle mechanics with an intriguing story ever since I first played Portal. The Spectrum Retreat is yet another very good example.StoryYou're the only guest in a hotel that seems to be run by well meaning, albeit somewhat creepy looking robots. Why are you here? Why is every day literally the same, right down to the conversation with the manager about the wheather? What's with the geometry of this place not making sense? And what is the plan of that woman calling you, telling you to essentially break out, obviously knowing way more about this place than she is willing to tell you? If you now think that this sounds like yet another one of those AI-gone-crazy plots that we are all to familiar with by now: I won't go into any detail here, obviously, but I can promise you that there is way more to it than that.As you may have guessed, this does not make for a funny story like Portal's by any stretch. In this regard, it is a lot more similar to, for example, The Talos Principle, tackling some difficult issues and raising questions.GameplayThe main part in terms of gameplay consists of multiple puzzle chambers that you solve one by one, very much in the spirit of Portal, while there are more and more elements introduced that make the puzzles increasingly complex. The primary element is an interesting colour switching mechanic that enables you to pass through barriers, but also fall through bridges, if they are of the colour that you "absorbed" last. There is a nice learning curve to the puzzles without them ever becoming too terribly difficult, but also without boring you by staying too simple for too long.I am happy to say that time is not a factor with the puzzle elements, as I do not like that at all in games like this.As with most of these titles, the game is best played using keyboard and mouse as you will need to aim for blocks having the colour you need (and for other things later on), sometimes from quite a bit away. It is never really fiddly, but I would imagine that trying to do it with a controller might get irritating. Some IssuesWhile the game, as I said, is good, there are some issues that keep it from being excellent. Apart from some smaller nitpicky ones, there are three that I want to address separately:The game, to me, felt sort of binary. It is basically designed in chunks. There are story and puzzle chunks, each of considerable length, that you alternate between and that only feel quite loosely connected to each other. As an example, you will never have to use your puzzle solving skills in the story part while, on the other hand, there are only very contained mentions of the story during puzzles, if at all. Basically, if the puzzles were switched out for some completely different ones, it would only take a few lines of altered dialogue in the story parts and the plot would make just as much sense, which makes it feel like there was a missed opportunity of intertwining the two aspects better. There is a lot of backtracking and doing the same things again and again involved in the story chunks. I am aware that this is clearly by design, but that didn't stop me from getting a bit annoyed by it as the game went on.While the puzzles are designed well enough, they do not feel as rigorously tested and optimized to minimize the amount of fail states as in other examples of the genre. There were multiple instances where I was in the middle of trying to solve a puzzle when I realized that I screwed up somewhere before and that there was nothing I could do about it. In that case, you will have to manually go to the menu to reset the puzzle and start over. The game does not recognize, let alone help, in such situations.ConclusionA good game I would love to see more of. Not without its faults, but very competent nevertheless. Sadly, it seems that this is one of those new releases that lack the broader public attention to not get buried under the pile of trash turning up on Steam every day. Let's hope this might still change.. Solid title.Solid narrative, relying a little bit too much on short fetch questing, but otherwise well told and with great voice acting. Nothing that will blow you out of your seat, mind you, but that's kinda hard this day and age,Solid puzzling, too, with regular new additions to the mechanics to keep it fresh. It's either a bit on the easy side or just constructed so logically that the puzzle rarely provided a headscratcher, but they were enjoyable. A few more stages on the level of the final puzzle section would have been nice (I'd gladly pay and replay if DLC added those into the existing game).Game took me about 5 hours and cost me 13 €. As already written, it's a solid title and I consider my money well spent.. Very addictive and fun game. Suprisingly challenging and easy to become engrossed in the game. The graphics are honestly really good and the voice acting is incredible. Very unique story, definitely worth the money and would recommend the game to anybody.
